Sony to release digital Walkman with built-in hard disk

TOKYO, Japan - Sony Corp. said July 1 it will put its new Walkman NW-HD1, capable of storing up to 1,300 songs, on the Japanese market on July 10 to pave the way for global sales. Containing a 20-gigabyte hard disk, the NW-HD1 can store the equivalent of 900 compact discs and run up to 30 hours on a single charge of its battery. It can be hooked up to a personal computer to download music.

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. unveiled June 30 what it calls the world's first DVD recorder that supports single-side, dual-layer Blu-ray Discs with a maximum capacity of 50 gigabytes. The DMR-E700BD, the high-end model of Matsushita's DIGA DVD recorder series, will be available in Japan on an open-price basis on July 31.

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam - Employees at a music store in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, examine pirated compact discs (CDs), a major headache for such retailers. The owner of the shop said pirated music CDs and videos are mass produced in China, smuggled into Vietnam and sold at one-fourth regular prices. Vietnamese authorities have begun considering legal measures to regulate pirated CDs, but are unlikely to be able to stem their spread, at least for now in the absence of adequate laws in the country protecting intellectual property rights.
