Japan protests against Pakistan's nuclear tests

Japanese Foreign Minister Keizo Obuchi (R) summoned Pakistani Charge d'Affaires Duray Kureshi (L) to the Foreign Ministry late Thursday night to lodge a stern protest against the nuclear tests the country conducted earlier in the day. The Japanese government imposed economic sanctions on Pakistan on Friday, suspending new yen loans and grants-in-aid.
