Kidnapped Papuan independence leader found dead

JAYAPURA, Indonesia - Theys Hiyo Eluay (photo), an independence leader in the easternmost Indonesian province of Papua, is found dead in his car on Nov. 11 in the Skouw area on the border between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia's Papua Province. He was kidnapped on Nov. 10 by a group of unidentified men.

PORT NUMBAY, Indonesia - In a ceremony attended by senior Indonesian government officials, some 3,000 Papuans on May 29 kick off a six-day congress in the provincial capital to ''clarify the history of Papua's independence.'' Amid shouts of ''Merdeka (Independence),'' Theys Eluay (R), chairman of the pro-independence Papuan People Council, said the Indonesian government has given the Papuan people ''only lies,'' so ''the people of Papua must wake up to grab again your homeland.''
