Asahi Kasei Corp. honorary fellow Akira Yoshino receives the trophy for the European Inventor Award in Vienna in June 2019. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Oct. 9, 2019, that Yoshino won the 2019 Nobel Prize in chemistry together with Germany's John Goodenough and Britain's Stanley Whittingham for their contribution to the development of lithium-ion batteries.
