Spain: Hail and Heavy Rain Hit Malaga’s Axarquía Region on Christmas Eve

On December 24 (Christmas Eve), a storm bringing heavy rain and hail struck the Axarquía region of Málaga province in southern Spain. In several coastal and inland towns, the ground and even the beaches were covered in white, and a waterspout was also sighted offshore near Chilches. Authorities issued an amber warning for heavy rain and activated an emergency flood prevention plan. Traffic was disrupted on the A-7 motorway due to poor visibility and slippery road conditions, with some sections closed. Reports included localized flooding of homes and roads, as well as minor collisions, but no major damage has been confirmed so far.

Star Explosion Reveals New Space Ingredients

Handout - Scientists have spotted chlorine and potassium hiding inside the remains of a blown-up star for the first time. Using Japan’s XRISM space telescope, they found these elements inside the giant cloud of debris left behind by the supernova called Cassiopeia A. The explosion happened about 11,000 light-years from Earth, but it is still giving up new secrets today. The find shows how stars don’t just light up the sky, they also make many of the elements that help build planets and life. Even long after a star explodes, it can still teach us something new about the universe. This discovery was published in a scientific paper on December 4 this year, and the image was released on January 28, 2024, using data from NASA’s Chandra telescope along with Hubble, Webb and Spitzer. Handout Photomontage shows Settlement Growth in the Nile Delta. The United Nations’ World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 was published on 17 November 2025. Drawing on data from the Joint Research Centre’s Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL), developed under the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS), the report tracks changes in population distribution across more than 12,000 urban settlements. It highlights a global shift in settlement patterns, with the majority of the world’s population now living in urban areas. This image, created with GHSL data, focuses on the Nile Delta in Egypt, one of the world’s most densely populated regions. By comparing estimates of built-up surface at three points in time, it shows how the extent of urban development has changed between 1975 and 2025, along with projections for 2075.
