China: Burning Debris Flow Down Flooded River In Liaoning

On July 28, 2024, in Fushun, Liaoning, a northeastern province of China, a rare and startling natural spectacle occurred—fire floating on water. As heavy rains caused river levels to rise, piles of straws that had accumulated along the riverbank were swept downstream. Remarkably, some of this debris had caught fire, and the flames continued to burn as the straws floated along the current. This unusual occurrence of fire traveling on the water's surface, without being extinguished, produced thick black smoke and presented a frightening scene. According to the filmer Ms. Lin, the straw may have been artificially ignited to prevent excessive debris from piling up in the river along with the current and causing serious consequences.
