TOKYO, Japan - FamilyMart Co., Itochu Corp. and Toshiba Tec Corp. said Dec. 20 that they will jointly test their new system to process a large number of purchase items instantaneously using store cash registers between Jan. 30 and Feb. 24 in a project supported by the government. The trials, which will involve the use of smart tags (shown with arrows) and Suica electronic cash cards, will seek to double the speed at which shopping transactions are currently processed at regular stores.

On August 22, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced that three convenience store companies, Seven-Eleven Japan, FamilyMart, and Lawson, will begin a demonstration experiment for joint delivery.
