Shunichi Suzuki (file photo taken in February, 1983), known for moving the metropolitan government office to the Shinjuku district after establishing the basis for local autonomy when he was a bureaucrat, died on May 14, 2010. He was 99. Suzuki served four four-year terms as governor of the capital from 1979, during which he restored the city's fiscal health and moved the government building to Shinjuku Ward from Yurakucho in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward in March 1991.
