Ex-Tokyo Gov. Shunichi Suzuki dies at 99

TOKYO, Japan - Former Tokyo Gov. Shunichi Suzuki (file photo taken in February, 1983), known for moving the metropolitan government office to the Shinjuku district after establishing the basis for local autonomy when he was a bureaucrat, died on May 14, 2010. He was 99. Suzuki served four four-year terms as governor of the capital from 1979, during which he restored the city's fiscal health and moved the government building to Shinjuku Ward from Yurakucho in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward in March 1991.

Russian cellist Rostropovich dies at 80

TOKYO, Japan - Mstislav Rostropovich plays the cello at a hall in Tokyo in February, 2000, while Seiji Ozawa conducts. Rostropovich, a noted Azerbaijan-born cellist and conductor, also known as a pro-democracy activist, died in a Moscow hospital, Russia's Itar-Tass news agency said on April 27. He was 80.

SEOUL, South Korea - Korean professional wrestling legend Kim Il, who went by the Japanese name Kintaro Oki and won fame in both Japan and South Korea, died in a Seoul hospital on Oct. 26. He was 77. S. Korean A-bomb survivor who sought unpaid medical fees dies

TOKYO, Japan - Lee Kang Young (photo), a South Korean atomic bomb survivor who filed a lawsuit in Japan over unpaid medical allowances, died on July 11 in a hospital in Busan, South Korea. He was 78. Lee, born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, was exposed to radiation in the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, while he was working there as a forced laborer. TOKYO, Japan - Movie director Koreyoshi Kurahara (file photo taken in February, 1996) died of pneumonia at a hospital in Yokohama on Dec. 28, 2002. He was 75. His films included ''Kitakitsune Monogatari'' (The Glacier Fox) released in 1978, ''Nankyoku Monogatari'' (Antarctica) in 1983 and ''Hiroshima'' in 1995.

TOKYO, Japan - TV, film and stage actress Han Bunjaku (file photo taken in February, 1992) died of heart failure at a Tokyo hospital on Nov. 5 at the age of 54. Han, whose parents are from Taiwan, was born in Tokyo as Fan Wenshiao and brought up in Hiroshima Prefecture.

Zenko Suzuki

Zenko Suzuki Born on Jan. 11, 1911 in Iwate Prefecture. After graduating from the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry's Fisheries Institute (now Tokyo University of Fisheries) in 1935, Suzuki worked for various fisheries organizations. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1947. Suzuki became Japan's 70th prime minister on July 17, 1980 following the sudden death of then Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira. He served as premier until Nov. 27, 1982. Photo was taken in February, 1986.
