Panel calls for maximum spending cuts in FY 2008 budget

TOKYO, Japan - Taizo Nishimuro (R), chairman of the Fiscal System Council, submits a recommendation to Finance Minister Fukushiro Nukaga at the Finance Ministry in Tokyo on Nov. 19. The recommendation calls for ''maximum spending cuts'' in compiling the fiscal 2008 state budget in areas such as social security as part of efforts to put its debt-ridden finances in order.
