Nagasaki Harbour and Nakamachi Church

Nagasaki Harbour and Nakamachi Church

This photo captures the northern part of Nagasaki City and the entrance to Nagasaki Port taken from the mountain behind Fukusaiji Temple. The red brick building in the center is Nakamachi Church constructed in 1899 on the site where the residence of the lord of the Omura Domain used to be. Therefore, this photo is presumed to have been taken between 1896 and 1899 when the Fortress Zone Act was implemented and it was prohibited to take photos of Nagasaki city. The roof of the main hall of Fukusaiji Temple is visible at the bottom of the photo. The brick building on the right is the Tobacco Public Corporation. A row of warehouses on the coast face the sea in the center of the photo.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:A. Farsari, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)

The city of Nagasaki seen from Fukusaiji Temple

This is a view from the cemetery at Fukusaiji Temple looking over central Nagasaki and the waterfront area from Daikoku-machi to Dejima. The re-routing of Nakashima River had not been completed at this time, so the date is between 1877 and 1887. Also, the construction of the new Urakami Road along the waterfront from Dejima to Goto-machi has not been completed yet. A cannon platform is visible near the edge of the pine tree. The open land in the centre is the site of the former Omura Clan residence.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number109‐4‐0]
