GDSF Tenth Division holds earthquake response exercise

NAGOYA, Japan - Officers of the Ground Self-Defense Force Tenth Division hold an earthquake disaster drill at the divisional headquarters in the GSDF Moriyama base in Nagoya on July 3 to cope with the aftermaths of a major earthquake that has been anticipated to strike the Chubu region. The drill was intended to test the division's response to a magnitude 8.6 earthquake that occurred at 5 a.m., with 170,000 people becoming quake victims in Aichi, Gifu and Mie prefectures. The division plans to compile an earthquake response action plan by March next year.

SAPPORO, Japan - Trucks of the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) unload snow at Odori Park in Sapporo, Hokkaido, on Jan. 9 to prepare for the 53rd Sapporo Snow Festival on Feb. 5 to 11. Some 7,000 trucks will be mobilized until Jan. 16 to deliver snow from outside Sapporo which will be used by about 25,000 volunteers from civic groups and GDSF personnel to build 312 sculptures made from snow and ice.
