Some 380 runners from 50 countries and regions finished the 245-kilometer event from Athens to Sparta in southern Greece. Following the footsteps of the ancient Greek soldier Pheidippides, their common goal was to cross the finish line on Sunday. According to ancient Greek historians, in 490 BC, ahead of the battle of Marathon against the Persian forces, Pheidippides ran from Athens to Sparta to request support. He reached his destination on foot nonstop within two days. In 1982, three British runners set off to test whether the references were correct, leading to the establishment of the event.

Buttle comes from behind to win NHK Trophy

Yagudin wins 4th world title, Honda 3rd in skating

Olympic bronze medal winner Timothy Goebel (L) of the United States captured the silver medal and Takeshi Honda (R) won Japan's first medal in the men's event in 25 years with the bronze.

SALT LAKE CITY, United States - Japan's Takeshi Honda waves to spectators at the Salt Lake Ice Center on Feb. 14 after finishing his performance in the men's figure skating event of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Honda had to settle for fourth place, behind gold medalist Alexei Yagudin and silver medalist Evgeni Plushenko, both of Russia, and American Tim Goebel, who took the bronze.
