U.S., Japanese researchers launch joint study on galaxy

NEW YORK, United States - Junichiro Makino (R), assistant professor of the University of Tokyo, shows off an astronomical supercomputer, GRAPE6, developed by his university group and claimed to be the fastest of its kind. He was in New York on June 1 to mark the start the same day of a Japan-U.S. joint project on the galaxy. U.S. astronomers will use the computer, on loan from the university, while accessing via the Internet a larger GRAPE6 supercomputer based in Japan to find out about the galaxy's birth and development.
