US: Strong Winter Storm Brings Blizzard Conditions To Sierra Nevada 3

A strong winter storm hit the Sierra Nevada on Friday, March 1, bringing heavy snow and high winds. Blizzard Warnings were issued for the area, including Lake Tahoe and eastern Nevada. The Sierra Avalanche Center warned that the danger of avalanches was high. Yosemite National Park and many ski resorts in the region announced they were closing at least for the day.

Islamic halal meals are prepared in cooking areas strictly separated from areas for non-halal foods. Detainees have six dishes to choose from and the meals cost $3.1 million per year. Some detainees after release argue that they lost weight due to what they say is the low quality of the meals but a camp officer downplayed the dispute, saying such accusations are part of an ''information war'' former captives engage in.

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba - An Arabic-language translation of a Harry Potter story in this Sept. 1, 2009 photo is a popular library book at a detention camp complex in the U.S. naval base in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay. The library is stocked with about 16,000 books and 1,400 magazines in 22 languages as well as DVDs of movies. Detainees can check out books and they are delivered to their cells for reading. Disney cartoons are also popular.

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba - This Sept. 1, 2009 photo shows a copy of U.S. President Barack Obama's order with his signature posted near a yard at a detention camp in the U.S. naval base in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay. Obama in the document ordered the camp complex be shut down by January 2010. Many detainees were ''happy and excited'' on hearing the policy.

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The first facility in the U.S. detention camp complex is left vacant and overgrown with vegetation at the U.S. naval base in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay on Sept. 2, 2009. Some well-known photos of blindfolded detainees in orange uniforms were taken at the facility, called Camp X-Ray, which was used for only four months until April 2002. The detainees were held in outdoor cage-like structures. A petty officer said, ''People still think of Camp X-Ray when you hear the word Guanatanamo, even though this place has been closed for years and living conditions of detainees have much improved since.''

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba - A man sits near a guard in a fenced recreation yard in the maximum-security Camp 5 for detainees categorized as ''non-compliant'' at the U.S. naval base in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay on Sept. 1, 2009. Each detainee can spend two to four hours a day in the yard depending on behavior.
