STORY: A look at some U.S. balloon launch facilities via satellite imagery DATELINE: Feb. 18, 2023 LENGTH: 00:02:10 LOCATION: Beijing CATEGORY: TECHNOLOGY SHOTLIST: various of satellite image of some balloon launch facilities in the U.S. STORYLINE: Satellite imagery obtained by researchers shows some of the balloon launch facilities of the U.S. These bases have been in operation for decades. Goodfellow Air Force Base is located in central Texas, U.S. The Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility was founded in 1961 in Texas, U.S. Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, U.S. conducted its first high-altitude balloon test in 1947. Many of the balloons fly across the Atlantic, reaching North Africa, UK, Norway and other places. The Alice Springs Ballooning Facility in Australia was established by NASA in the 1970s.
