Juncao, which in Chinese literally means "mushroom" and "grass", can be used, as its name suggests, to grow edible and medicinal mushrooms, as livestock feed or as a green barrier to control soil erosion and stop desertification. According to a book released by the National Diet Library on March 28, the Shrine gave a green light in 1969 to the idea of its enshrining Japanese Class-A war criminals from World War II, nine years before it actually did so, and the government was more closely involved in discussions regarding whom the shrine should honor than currently believed.

AMAMI, Japan - Hiroshi Yamashita, an amateur researcher of plants in Amami Islands, has published a Japanese pictorial book on wild plants in the tropical islands south of Kyushu, titled ''The Endangered Plants in Amami.'' The book features 150 species of rare plants that Yamashita has photographed over the past 30 years. Among them are a small ever-green shrub known as Vaccinium amamianum that grows on big trees and flowers of Nothapodytes amaminanus, which has recently been recognized as a new tree species native to Amami
