U.S. freighter with PCB-contaminated waste leaves Yokohama

YOKOHAMA, Japan - The U.S. cargo ship Greenwave leaves Yokohama port May 13 carrying some 100 tons of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated waste from U.S. forces in Japan. The freighter is believed to be heading for Wake Island, some 3,700 kilometers west of Hawaii, for unloading.

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Activists from the Greenpeace Japan environmentalist group stage a protest May 13 in front of a U.S. Army facility at Yokohama port, protesting against the shipment of some 100 tons of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated waste. The U.S. cargo ship Greenwave left Yokohama the same day carrying the waste probably to Wake Island.

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Shown here are 14 containers holding PCB-contaminated waste to be transported to Hawaii's Wake Island by U.S. cargo ship Greenwave, which arrived May 13 at a Yokohama dock maintained by the U.S. forces in Japan. The waste, believed to contain carcinogenic compounds, was transported by cargo ship on March 23 to ports in Vancouver and Seattle but returned to Yokohama on April 18 after being turned away.
