World Cup 2026 – US: Mexico’s Win Over South Korea Sparks Street Celebrations in L.A.

Mexico secured its place in the World Cup knockout stage with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara on Thursday, June 18, sparking large celebrations at watch parties in Los Angeles' Koreatown. While most fans celebrated peacefully, one man was shot in the leg near a watch party on Irolo Street, and the Los Angeles Police Department issued a citywide tactical alert as crowds filled the streets.

World Cup 2026 – Mexico Squad Greeted by Fans in Guadalajara Before South Korea Showdown

Mexico's national soccer team arrived in Guadalajara on Tuesday ahead of their Group A World Cup 2026 match against South Korea, where dozens of fans welcomed them at the team hotel. Players later came out of their rooms to greet supporters, who gathered with flags and chants. The match is scheduled for Friday, June 19 at Estadio Guadalajara.

Heavy rainfall over the weekend caused severe flooding across Guadalajara's metropolitan area. The storm also downed dozens of trees, disrupted public transport, and temporarily closed major roads. Some areas recorded rainfall in a few hours equivalent to an entire month's average for May.

Panic broke out at Guadalajara International Airport after the reported death of cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes triggered violence across parts of western Mexico. The unrest followed the killing of Oseguera Cervantes — known as “El Mencho,” founder of the Jalisco New Generation Cartels — during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
