(1)UNESCO adds Japanese sites to World Heritage list

HONGU, Japan - The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's World Heritage Committee decided July 1 in Suzhou, China, to include in its heritage list the holy grounds and pilgrimage path in the Kii mountains straddling central and western Japan. Kumano-Hongu Shrine (in photo) in Hongu, Wakayama Prefecture, is located in the heritage district.

HONGU, Japan - Thirty young people returning to their hometown of Hongu, Wakayama Prefecture for the summer vacation attend a Coming-of-Age ceremony sponsored by the town office Aug. 14. The town held the ceremony during the summer holidays instead of the official holiday for the celebration on Jan. 15.
