1st Fukushima beach opens since nuclear disaster

IWAKI, Japan - Three local women working as tour guides, including Yukiei Hakozaki (L), enter the water at Nakoso beach in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, on July 16, 2012, marking the start of the swimming season on the Marine Day public holiday. The beach opened the same day as the prefecture's only functioning beach for the summer, with all other beaches to remain closed following the Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011.

FUKUOKA, Japan - An electric car runs on Kyushu University's Hakozaki campus in Fukuoka, southwestern Japan, on Aug. 19 on a test-drive to promote a project to jointly use electric cars to improve the environment in the city. The project is being promoted by a nonprofit organization in Fukuoka in cooperation with the Fukuoka municipality and Kyushu Electric Power Co.

The liner Hakozaki Maru SS (pictured being finished in the dock) was taken over by the Japanese government during the Second World War for service as a transport.
