SHINGU, Japan - A shrine maiden stands besides a huge fan which is being aired along with smaller ones in the hall of Kumano Hayatama Taisha on July 5 ahead of the annual ''Ogitate Matsuri'' festival beginning on July 14. Kumano Hayato Taisha is one of three shinto shrines located in the Kumano district of Wakayama Prefecture. The fans are reproductions of the real ones owned by the shrine that date from the Muromachi period (1333-1568) and are designated as national treasures.
