Japan: Bear Captured After Series of Sightings in Utsunomiya, North of Tokyo

On Tuesday, June 9, a bear was captured in Utsunomiya, the capital and most populous city of Tochigi Prefecture, located approximately 105 kilometers north of Tokyo, following a series of sightings over the weekend.

Born on Dec. 3, 1899 in Hiroshima Prefecture and deceased on Aug. 13, 1965. Ikeda, a bureaucrat-turned politician, served as prime minister from July 1960 to November 1964 and laid the basis for Japan's rapid postwar economic growth. During his tenure, Japan became a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in 1964 and staged the Olympic Games in Tokyo the same year. (Photo was taken on Dec. 21, 1963)

Widow of ex-Prime Minister Ikeda dies

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsue Ikeda (file photo), the widow of former Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda, died at a Tokyo hospital Jan. 9. She was 88. Ikeda was the mother of Noriko Ikeda, the 60-year-old wife of Yukihiko Ikeda, 63, foreign minister from January 1996 to September 1997.

Kiichi Miyazawa

Born Oct. 8, 1919 in Tokyo. Miyazawa is one of the few living politicians to have seen Japan emerge from the ruins after World War II to reach economic superpower status. He joined the Finance Ministry in 1942. After Japan surrendered to the Allied Powers in 1945, Miyazawa became a secretary to then Finance Minister Hayato Ikeda and attended the 1951 Japan-U.S. peace conference in San Francisco to help the minister as an interpreter. Miyazawa served as prime minister between Nov. 5, 1991 and Aug. 9, 1993 after holding various portfolios such as foreign minister, finance minister and chief cabinet secretary.
