This is Oura and Higashiyamate from Minamiyamate. The newly built Confucius Shrine is in the middle. The street with the western-style buildings in the foreground used to be where foreigners used to go out to drink. Three buildings behind Confucius Shrine to the right have been recently restored ‘Seven Western Houses of Higashiyamate.’ The pink western style building in the upper right is Higashiyama Gakuin (the former British Consulate), the white building above it is Kaisei School. This is the Oura Bund around the mid-Meiji period. The second building from the right is Oura No. 10, the home of the Nagasaki Club, a social place for foreign residents at the time. The electric pole in front of the building was installed by Nagasaki Electric Light Company after 1893. The hill behind the buildings is Higashiyamate. This was after completion of the renovation of Oura Church from 1878 to 1879. The small western-style house under what would later be the Shimizu residence on top of the hill may be the old Walker residence. The Oura and Sagarimatsu neighbourhoods of the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement are seen on the right and left, respectively, from the hillside to the south of Higashiyamate. The houses stand in an organized pattern at Sagarimatsu. The photograph reveals the juxtaposition of the settlement and Japanese neighborhoods. Matsugae Bridge and Benten Bridge, both built in 1889, are visible. The building in the upper right of the photo is Russel Hall, the main hall of Kwassui Women’s School when it was first established. The building just underneath is Higashiyamata Junibankan, a designated important national cultural property. This photo was taken from the middle hill of HIgashiyamate. Dutch Slope and the entire stone wall of Kwassui are visible. The western style building at the bottom of the slope with the red cloth hanging from the balcony would later become a dormitory of the Nagasaki Communication Office.
