Slope found in Itsukahara tumulus

KYOTO, Japan - A slope at Itsukahara tumulus (late 3rd century, keyhole-shaped tumulus) in Muko, Kyoto Prefecture, western Japan, is shown on Oct. 16, 2014. Muko City Center for Archaeological Operations announced that the slope was arranged in a similar manner to the Hashihaka tumulus in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture. Some say Hashihaka is the tomb of Queen Himiko.

KASHIHARA, Japan - Photo taken Jan. 4, 2010, shows a fragment of a bronze mirror that was among 81 mirrors which Kashihara Archeological Institute said Jan. 7, 2010, were found at a tomb mound in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture. The mirror the piece belongs to has an inscription of an era name and year that suggests it is from the year 240, the same year the emissary to China of legendary Japanese ruler Queen Himiko is believed to have returned home.

TOKYO, Japan - A bronze mirror with an inscription indicating it was made in 235 in Wei-era China is on display at the Tokyo National Museum after a private collector brought it to the attention of scholars recently. While it is not known where the mirror was originally found, some experts say it may be one of 100 bronze mirrors given to Japan by the Wei Dynasty when Queen Himiko of Japan's Yamatai Kingdom sent her first delegation to China in 239, four years after the mirror was made.
