Japan: M7.5 Quake Hits Off Aomori Prefecture, Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful Magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck offshore at 11:15 PM in Japan, leading to immediate tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for residents. Warnings for waves up to 3 meters (10 ft) were issued for the north-eastern coast, specifically the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. Tsunamis between 20 and 50 cm (7-18 inches) high were subsequently observed at several ports in the region. Furthermore, authorities are cautioning the public that "there is a possibility of even more powerful tremors." They also urged attention be paid to the potential for a larger subsequent earthquake.

Agreement reached on release of fishermen detained by Russia

Yokozuna Akebono undergoes fatness test

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Yokozuna Akebono receives a body fat test in a pool at Keio University's Hiyoshi campus on Aug. 24. The Japan Sumo Association requires all sumo wrestlers weighing 160 kilograms or more to take such a test. In another examination conducted earlier in the day, the 29-year-old Hawaiian registered 234.5 kg in weight for his own record. He became the heaviest among sumo wrestlers.

The Kiso Komagatake seen from Hishoshimura which was a shukuba of the former Nakasendo. Hiyoshimura is located to the northeast of Kisogun and southwest of Nagano prefecture, and most of the land is forest.
