Japan: Strong Quake Halts Trains In Greater Tokyo Area

A strong earthquake struck the Kanto region Friday evening, August 9. According to reports, the magnitude is 5.3. Shaking was also felt in Tokyo. The quake brought trains to a halt across the region.

YOKOHAMA, Japan - A memorial service for prisoners of war from the British Commonwealth who died at detention camps in Japan during World War II took place on Aug. 7 in Yokohama. About 100 people, including diplomats from Australia and New Zealand as well as Japanese students and citizens, attended the Christian service at the British Commonwealth War Cemetery in the city's Hodogaya Ward.

This is a Felice Beato photograph taken somewhere between Hodogaya and Fujisawa, possibly near the post town of Totsuka famous for its pine trees. The shop signs read Issen-meshi (One Sen Food) and Ochazuke (Rice with Green Tea).
