Historian Ienaga dies at 89

TOKYO, Japan - Saburo Ienaga (in file photo taken in February 1997), a historian known for his legal battle against the government certification of history textbooks, died Nov. 29 at a Tokyo hospital, people familiar with him said Dec. 1. He was 89. Ienaga became politically involved when a high-school textbook he penned, which contained descriptions of Japan's war crimes during World War II, was rejected by the then Education Ministry during the certification process in 1953. He filed the first of three suits in 1965 against the Education Ministry and was finally awarded damages in 1997 after a 32-year-long legal battle.
