LOS ANGELES, United States - Nobuko Iinuma, a 68-year-old writer based in Los Angeles, holds a bloodstained Japanese flag as she speaks at an event in a Los Angeles suburb commemorating the 55th anniversary of the end of World War II on Aug. 14. Iinuma said her neighbor, Gold Mayer, had asked her to help him find the family of a Japanese soldier who died in battle in the Philippines in 1944. Mayer found the flag wrapped around the dead soldier's body.

LOS ANGELES, United States - Jokichi Takamine III (R), 77, skims through documents at his home in suburban Los Angeles for an exhibition commemorating his grandfather, Japanese-born chemist Jokichi Takamine (1854-1922), to be held in Japan. Biography of Japanese sculptor to be published

LOS ANGELES, United States - Nobuko Iinuma talks to Kyodo News in Los Angeles on Feb. 16 on a biography she wrote of the late Japanese sculptor Gozo Kawamura, known in the United States for his statues that adorn public buildings. Kawamura, who died in March 1950, is noted in the U.S. for creating the statues at the New York Public Library and the Supreme Court, said Iinuma, who spent four years researching Kawamura's life.
