The approach to Ikuta Shrine

The approach to Ikuta Shinto Shrine taken around the turn of the 20th century. Formerly referred to as Ikuta-no-Baba, this was a scenic path lined with plum and cherry trees and stretching for about 870 meters from the shrine to the beach. After the opening of Kobe port in 1868, a foreign settlement was established along the coast, but a railroad line was constructed here in 1874 and the northern area depicted here remained.==Date:unknown, Place:Kobe, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number56‐26‐0]

On the hillside to the left of the Takimichi (waterfall road) is a hot spring called Nunobiki Spa fed by boiling-hot, carbonated spring water from underground. There used to be many inns, restaurants, and teahouses along the road continuing from the northeast of Ikuta Shinto Shrine to this area. Many people visited here to enjoy the cool air during summer.==Date:unknown, Place:Kobe, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number56‐13‐0]

Ikuta Shrine

Ikuta Shrine

Ikuta Shinto Shrine is located a few minutes on foot north of JR Sannomiya Station (present-day Chuo Ward). In the year 806, 44 families were designated to serve as shrine supporters (kanbe), and this is said to be the origin of the name Kobe (Kobe and kanbe are rendered with the same ideographs). The main hall is in the center, the grove behind it is the remainder of the great Ikuta forest. The forest has been famous since ancient times, and it is often mentioned in songs. It also the site of a 12th-century battle between the Genji and Heike clans.
