On Sept. 23, 2014, the Urumqi People's Intermediate Court in the western China region of Xinjiang sentenced Tohti to life in prison for separatism, an unusually severe conclusion to a case that has drawn condemnation from around the world. The sentence, which includes the seizure of all of Tohti's assets, is the harshest punishment handed down to a Chinese activist in the recent past.
