The five-storey residential building came down on Tuesday night in Imbaba, a densely populated neighborhood in the southwestern part of the Greater Cairo metropolitan area, the ministry said in a statement, adding that five ambulances rushed to the scene and transferred the injured to nearby hospitals. An eyewitness told Xinhua that the collapsed building also destroyed the balconies of neighboring buildings. The police said in a statement that they had evacuated residents in the neighboring buildings over the fear of more collapses, adding that the cause of the tragedy was not immediately clear. According to the Egyptian Health Ministry, the accident took place in Abu Sifin church in the Imbaba neighborhood, and four of those injured are in unstable conditions. The Egyptian Interior Ministry said the fire started from an air conditioner on the second floor of the church building because of an electrical fault. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi extended his condolences to the victims of the church fire in a phone call to Pope Tawadros II, head of Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church.
