It was part of President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi's initiative to "care for the health of mothers and fetuses" for early detection of diseases transmitted from mothers to fetuses. According to the ministry, the initiative aims at the early detection of infection with the B virus, human immunodeficiency virus, and syphilis for pregnant women. The initiative also includes monitoring the condition of mothers and newborns. It has several procedures and various necessary analyses to detect anemia, or to determine mothers' requirement for an anti-D injection after childbirth.
