BATAM, Indonesia, Dec. 6 Kyodo - Japan began training three Southeast Asian countries in sea monitoring from the air, in the latest effort to help enhance their maritime surveillance capabilities amid China's growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. Indonesian, Philippine and Malaysian coast guard officials boarded an airplane from Batam Island, western Indonesia, near Singapore, to get briefed on high-tech surveillance equipment, according to the Japan Coast Guard. U.K. aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth makes 1st port call in Japan

British aircraft carrier the Queen Elizabeth made its first port call in Japan on Saturday, aiming to showcase the two countries' defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region where China's military has been growing increasingly assertive. Taking part in a joint exercise since Thursday with Japan, the United States, the Netherlands and Canada, the flagship of Britain's Carrier Strike Group arrived at the U.S. Navy base in Yokosuka, southwest of Tokyo, and is scheduled to depart next Thursday.
