Southwest Japan islands added to UNESCO World Heritage list

UNESCO decided Monday to add a chain of islands in southwestern Japan with dense subtropical forests to its natural World Heritage list, Japanese government officials said. The World Heritage Committee of the U.N. organization decided during an online session to list as Japan's fifth World Natural Heritage site the 43,000 hectare area, comprising Amami-Oshima Island and Tokunoshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture as well as the northern part of the main Okinawa Island and Iriomote Island in Okinawa Prefecture.

Boats set out on journey to replicate migration 30,000 years ago

Two boats made of bulrush prepare to leave Yonaguni Island for Iriomote Island, both in Okinawa Prefecture, on July 17, 2016, on a journey to replicate part of a hypothetical migration by a group of ancient settlers from what is now Taiwan about 30,000 years ago. The 6-meter-long vessels made of a local plant called "himegama," which is similar to narrow leaf cattail, will travel the 75-kilometer journey between the two Japanese islands near Taiwan with a research team from Tokyo's National Museum of Nature and Science on board. Endangered Iriomote cat said threatened by poisonous toad

TOKYO, Japan - The endangered Iriomote wildcats (file photo) on Iriomotejima Island in Okinawa Prefecture face a new threat from an invasion of the island by poisonous marine toads. The island is the only known habitat for the rare cats, which have been designated as a species requiring preservation. They were confirmed as a new species of cat in 1967.
