Japan's tsunami warning signs adopted for global use

TOKYO, Japan - The international tsunami hazard zone sign adopted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Aug. 5 its ''Warning: Tsunami Hazard Zone'' sign and two other standard tsunami signs, designed by the agency in March 2005, have been adopted by the ISO for worldwide use. The two other ISO-recognized tsunami signs consist of a green-on-white sign designating a tsunami evacuation area and a similar green-on-white sign designating a tsunami evacuation building.

Temperatures continued Tuesday their streak of dangerously hot readings in much of the Bay Area. Forecasters expected the heat to begin tapering off slowly on Wednesday. The California ISO (Independent System Operator Corporation) issued Stage 2 Energy Emergency Alert for particular periods of time on Monday and Tuesday. Matsushita Battery devises paper-thin coin battery

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. has developed what it claims to be the world's thinnest coin-shaped lithium storage battery for use as a power source for thin card devices with integrated circuits (ICs) inside. The ''Paper Coin'' battery has a thickness of 0.4 millimeter (0.016 inch), thin enough to be mounted in IC cards with a thickness of 0.76 millimeter, designated as an international standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the company said in Osaka on Nov. 30.
