Corporate manager arrested for stealing Buddhist statue

KYOTO, Japan - This photo shows more than 20 Buddhist statues confiscated by police from the house of corporate manager Itsuo Abe, 59, of Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. The Kyoto prefectural police arrested Abe on suspicion of stealing a wooden statue of a multiheaded deity, which was created in the early Edo period (1603-1868), from a Kyoto temple in January.

BOJ board members to publish personal assets

TOKYO, Japan - Former Supreme Court Justice Itsuo Sonobe, who heads a Bank of Japan panel, tells reporters on July 5 that the panel plans to recommend the central bank require all nine Policy Board members, including the governor and two deputy governors, to publish their personal assets under new internal regulations. The panel came up with the plan amid a scandal over BOJ Governor Toshihiko Fukui's private investments.

FUKUSHIMA, Japan - Kenji Kusunoki, a 54-year-old former professor of the private Ohu University in Fukushima Prefecture, leaves his home in the prefectural capital at 6:30 a.m. Jan. 6 before being arrested later in the day on charges of leaking and helping to leak questions on last year's National Dentistry Examination to his students. Itsuo Ueda, a 59-year-old Health Sciences University of Hokkaido professor who served on the national exam board and is suspected of providing the questions to Kusunoki, was also arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police the same day.
