Chinese Boatmen at Port Arthur

Chinese Boatmen at Port Arthur

Chinese boatmen in the Port at Lushunkou, a district in the municipality of Dalian, Liaoning province, also called Lushun City or Lushun Port, formerly known as both Port Arthur and Ryojun. During the Russo-Japanese war, the Russians surrendered Port Arthur to the Japanese after nearly a year's siege: the Japanese expended 58,000 killed or wounded to obtain the town. As can be seen here, Lushunkou boasts an excellent natural harbour, the possession and control of which became a 'casus belli' (justification for the act of war) during the Russo-Japanese War (19041905). 43 Kuwana - Two large junks moored at the mouth of the Kiso River, and others sailing away to sea. To avoid crossing the numerous rivers flowing inland between Miya and Kuwana, travellers made their journey by boat. The boat trip was reputed to have been enjoyable. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858). 19 Ejiri - View over Mio-no-Matsu-bara, at the mouth of the Okitsu River (seen close in previous plate), to a hilly coastline beyond; junks anchored in foreground in front of a fishing village, and others sailing in the bay. The most magnificent view of the famous pine groves "Mihonomatsubara" could be had from this station. There stands a pine tree referred to in the famous legend "the feathered robe". This station is now the port of Shimizu, the biggest port between Yokohama and Nagoya. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858). A traditional boat

A traditional boat

Written Group of Japanese junks and boats in the canal . The Japanese boat on the other side of the shore is huge. This place is more like an inner sea than a canal. The aroma of life exudes from the photo.==Date:1864, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:F. Beato, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number28‐11‐0]

Mt. Fuji seen from Numakawa,Tagonoura

Mt. Fuji seen from Numakawa,Tagonoura

The boat is probably the cargo boat of the time, the Bezai boat. The sail has been folded, and the boat is anchored and covered with a straw mat. Tagonoura was a port of the Edo era where sengokubune (junks with a capacity for a thousand koku of rice) came in and out from Kashima, a territory of the Shogunate. The shadow of the wooden bridge is beautiful. * A photo from the same angle is in the book edited by Ozawa Kenji The End of the Bakufu and Meiji in Pictures , entitled Mt.Fuji from Tagonoura 1880s Kinpei Album, p.67. The only difference with (7) is the angle.==Date:unknown, Place:Shizuoka, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number15‐45‐0]
