French Senate Votes On Controversial CETA Free Trade Deal

The French government on Thursday faces a risky vote on the controversial CETA trade deal between the EU and Canada in the Senate where an unlikely alliance between left and right hopes to torpedo the pact. Takeuchi, 65, held the top bureaucratic post at the Foreign Ministry from February 2002 to January 2005, assisting with then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to North Korea in September 2002 and May 2004, and helping strengthen Japan-U.S. relations.
