OSAKA, Japan - The Finance Ministry's Mint Bureau in Osaka said Nov. 15 it will accept mail orders from Nov. 22 to Dec. 5 for its first colored silver coins to mark the fifth Winter Asian Games to be held in Aomori Prefecture in February 2003. The 1,000-yen coin made of pure silver features a skier and a skater on the front, and apples and the games' symbol on the back. The apples a major local product of Aomori.

OSAKA, Japan - A new 500 yen coin (L), which went into production on April 26, is shown next to a 500 yen coin currently in circulation. The Finance Ministry decided to issue the new coin after an increasing number of fake coins were found in vending machines across the nation. In most cases, altered South Korean 500 won coins, worth about 48 yen, were used. A 500 won coin is the same size as a 500 yen coin but weighs slightly more.
