Altay Prefecture is known for its long winter season that can last up to eight months a year. It is attracting skiers worldwide with its vast area of natural powder snow. The region has aspired to boost winter tourism in recent years, alluring visitors with skiing, ice fishing and other winter activities. An international ski resort has opened in Hemu Township in Xinjiang. The highest altitude of the ski resort is 2,848 meters. The maximum drop is 1,466 meters. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): WANG JIANGHAO, Tourist from Chengdu, Sichuan Province "I flew more than 3,000 km to ski on the natural trails in Hemu.
