Israeli Strikes Across Lebanon Leave At Least 33 Dead

Rescuers work amid the rubble after Israeli planes bombed a residential building in Joun, Lebanon, on Nov. 13, 2024. Israel's aerial bombardment claimed 33 lives across Lebanon on Tuesday, November 12, striking populations already displaced by the escalating confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah. This latest wave of strikes marks a significant shift in Israeli military strategy. The offensive extended beyond Hezbollah's traditional strongholds in Beirut's southern suburbs, reaching areas previously untouched by the conflict, where the Iran-backed Hezbollah has historically maintained no significant presence. This geographical expansion of operations raises concerns about a potential widening of the conflict. The health ministry declared "the Israeli enemy raid on Joun killed 12 people and wounded eight," in the strike on a town south of Beirut. It also added that a strike aimed a few kilometers further north, in the mountainous Aley region east of the capital, killed eight people. Photo by Ali Hashisho/X

Daibutsu (the Great Buddha),Ueno

There was once a Great Buddha on the hill at Ueno. It is said that Hori Tangonokami Naoyori built it at Shinobugaoka in 1631. The Buddhist monk Joun later cast it in bronze, but it was destroyed by fire in 1841. A new Buddha and temple housing were constructed in 1843. It is said that the temple housing was removed in 1873, which explains why the Buddha is exposed in this photograph. Probably taken between 1892 and 1897.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number53‐7‐0]
