Ministry viewed nukes entry into Japan as effective deterrent in 1960s

TOKYO, Japan - Diplomatic documents totaling 8,100 pages are unveiled to the media at the Diplomatic Record Office of the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo on July 7, 2010. The documents consist of eight files concerning the revision of the Japan-U.S. security treaty in 1960 and 29 files concerning the reversion of U.S.-occupied Okinawa to Japan in 1972.

Hayato Ikeda

Born on Dec. 3, 1899 in Hiroshima Prefecture and deceased on Aug. 13, 1965. Ikeda, a bureaucrat-turned politician, served as prime minister from July 1960 to November 1964 and laid the basis for Japan's rapid postwar economic growth. During his tenure, Japan became a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in 1964 and staged the Olympic Games in Tokyo the same year. (Photo was taken on Dec. 21, 1963)
