Former volleyball coach Matsudaira dies

TOKYO, Japan - File photo taken in July 2001 shows former Japan men's national volleyball team head coach Yasutaka Matsudaira. Matsudaira, who steered the country to the gold medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, died from a lung condition at a Tokyo hospital on Dec. 31, 2011, the Japan Volleyball Association said Jan. 5, 2012. He was 81.

Tokyo stocks mark fresh 4-year high

TOKYO, Japan - A stock price board at a brokerage house in Tokyo's Yurakucho district shows the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average on the Tokyo Stock Exchange climbing above 12,600 mark, the highest intraday level since July 5, 2001, before closing at 12,472.93, up 20.42 points over the previous day on Aug. 23.

Yoshiro Mori

Born July 14, 1937 in Ishikawa Prefecture. A journalist-turned politician, Mori was Japan's 85th prime minister. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1969 at the age of 32. After 30 years rising through the ranks in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Mori became LDP president and prime minister April 5, 2000 following the sudden death of then Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi. Mori was forced to resign as prime minister on April 26, 2001 due to his unpopularity with the public.
