The event featured inspiring speeches and showcased Chinese and American folk music performed with traditional Chinese instruments. U.S. bilingual comedian Jesse Appell highlighted Beijing's tourist attractions to around 150 participants in both languages. Attendees enjoyed a photo exhibition depicting Beijing and had the opportunity to win lucky draws for free stays in Beijing's five-star hotels. LONDON, Britain - Photo shows a file containing confidential papers created in 1980. The British National Archives disclosed some Foreign Office papers on Dec. 30, 2010, that revealed the British government was considering encouraging Tokyo to join European countries and the United States in imposing sanctions on Iran following the taking of American hostages at the U.S. Embassy in Iran in November 1979, as doing so without Japan would only give it enhanced business opportunities in the Middle Eastern country. Japan imposed sanctions on the country in June 1980 and lifted them in January 1981 after the release of the hostages.

Furuta ties Japan baseball record with 4 homers

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Yakult Swallows catcher Atsuya Furuta matched a Japanese single-game baseball record when he hit four home runs in the game against the Hiroshima Carp on June 28. Furuta hit a pair of solo shots, a two-run and a three-run drive at Hiroshima Stadium to become the fifth player in history following Yoshiyuki Iwamoto (1951), Sadaharu Oh (1964), Tony Solaita (1980) and Nigel Wilson (1997) to accomplish the feat.

Police add Soga, mother, 2 men to abduction list

TOKYO, Japan - The National Police Agency on Oct. 8 adds Hitomi Soga (L in top), her mother Miyoshi Soga (R in top), Toru Ishioka (L in bottom) and Kaoru Matsuki to its list of Japanese believed abducted to North Korea. Hitomi Soga and her mother disappeared from Sadogashima Island in Niigata Prefecture in 1978. Ishioka, from Sapporo, and Matsuki, from Kumamoto, are said to have been lured to North Korea from Spain in June 1980.

Masayoshi Ito

Born on Dec. 15, 1913 in Fukushima Prefecture. Ito was elected to the House of Representatives in 1963. He became acting deputy prime minister on June 12, 1980 after the sudden death of then Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira during the campaign for general elections. Ito stepped down as acting deputy prime minister on July 17 the same year. Died on May 20, 1994.

Masayoshi Ohira

Bureaucrat-turned politician who was prime minister between Dec. 7, 1978 and June 12, 1980. Born on March 12, 1910 in Kagawa Prefecture, Ohira joined the Finance Ministry in 1936. He was elected to the House of Representative in 1952. As foreign minister, Ohira was instrumental in normalizing diplomatic relations between Japan and China in 1972. He became prime minister in December 1978 but suddenly died in June 1980 during the campaign for general elections. Photo was taken on March 15, 1978.
