Former vice premier, No. 2 SDP lawmaker Kubo dies at 74

TOKYO, Japan - Wataru Kubo (file photo), a former Social Democratic Party (SDP) secretary general who served as vice premier-cum-finance minister in 1996, died on June 24 at a Kagoshima hospital. He was 74. A former House of Councillors lawmaker, Kubo was secretary general and deputy leader of the longtime opposition party when the party joined in forming a coalition government supporting then-Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa in 1993.

NAGOYA, Japan - Masaichi Hattori (L) and his wife Mieko, whose son was shot dead while studying in the United States 10 years ago, received the Galatti Award on Dec. 3 in Nagoya from the American Field Service (AFS) Intercultural Programs for their volunteer work to promote cultural understanding. The couple established the Yoshi Foundation in June 1993 with 10 million yen from their son Yoshihiro's life insurance.
