Eight prefectures in Japan announced on Jan. 24, 2014, the creation of a joint committee to promote and preserve the "ama" diving culture and have it designated an UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. Ama -- literally sea women -- are free-divers who collect pearls, shellfish, sea urchins and seaweed.
