The British National Archives disclosed some Foreign Office papers on Dec. 30, 2010, that revealed the British government was considering encouraging Tokyo to join European countries and the United States in imposing sanctions on Iran following the taking of American hostages at the U.S. Embassy in Iran in November 1979, as doing so without Japan would only give it enhanced business opportunities in the Middle Eastern country. Japan imposed sanctions on the country in June 1980 and lifted them in January 1981 after the release of the hostages.
