Lyricist Yu Aku dies at 70

TOKYO, Japan - Lyricist Yu Aku (file photo taken in June, 2005), famous for writing many popular hit songs in the 1970s and 1980s, died of urethral cancer on Aug. 1. He was 70. Aku, whose real name is Hiroyuki Fukada, debuted as a songwriter in 1967 and produced many popular lyrics in various categories from enka (Japanese ballads) to pops.

Lady Gaga sipped from the teacup at a news conference in Tokyo in June, 2011. It is smeared with her lipstick and the phrase "We pray for Japan" is written in Japanese across the front.

Ex-finance minister Murayama dies at 95

TOKYO, Japan - Former finance minister Tatsuo Murayama (file photo taken in June, 1999) died on May 20, 2010. He was 95. After serving as a finance ministry official, Murayama won a House of Representatives seat on the Liberal Democratic Party ticket in 1963 and served 12 terms, holding ministerial posts in finance and welfare affairs. He retired from politics in 2000.

Narita airport dispute arbitrator Sumiya dies at 86

TOKYO, Japan - Mikio Sumiya (file photo taken in June, 1985), a labor economist who acted as an arbitrator in the 1990s in a thorny dispute between the central government and opponents of Narita airport, died on Feb. 22 at a Tokyo hospital. He was 86. Sumiya, a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, previously served as president of the private Tokyo Woman's Christian University.

NIIGATA, Japan - A radioactive leakage occurs at a radioactive gaseous waste disposal facility area of the No. 5 reactor in the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant (file photo taken in June, 1996) in Niigata Prefecture on Dec. 20. The operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., said the incident will not have any impact on the surrounding area as the radioactive substance was contained within the building.
