WAKAYAMA, Japan - A bronze statue of modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk is unveiled during a ceremony in Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, on June 3, 2010, as part of events to mark the 120th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Turkey. The 4.2-meter-high, 4-ton statue was installed on May 20 near a lighthouse overlooking the wreck site of the Ertugrul, a Turkish warship that sank near the Pacific coast town in western Japan in 1890.

The Ertugrul Firkateyni traveled to Japan for a reciprocal visit following a trip to Istanbul by Japanese Prince and Princess Komatsu in 1887. The warship was caught in a typhoon while returning home and sank off the coast of Kushimoto. Of about 650 people on board, only 69 survived and returned home after local residents rescued them.

KUSHIMOTO, Japan - Contained in a box is the world's first fully cultivated bluefin tuna ready for marketing in the town of Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, on Sept. 3. Researchers at Kinki University in Osaka have succeeded in farming Pacific northern bluefin tuna from eggs, unlike existing farmed tuna that are reared from larvae caught in the wild.
